![]() No real order to this. ^^;; The Dancing Digimon Actually I hate the plot of this episode but I gotta admit it is really good for Joe fans. ^_^. It's actually a Joe-and-Sora-centric episode (you know how digidestined are often paired up for an episode or a few episodes? like Tai was with Matt and Mimi with Izzy in this particular arc) but Sora doesn't get much character development anyway, it really is Joe-centric. Basic plot: All the kids have been seperated. Joe and Sora meet up, and Gomamon gets Biyomon and Sora to make Joe their 'leader' to restore his confidence in himself. The four walk along until they find a church in a creepy graveyard. Here, there are a bunch of humans celebrating the Bakemon Holiday. But it turns out the humans are all Bakemon, bad Digimon. Gomamon and Biyomon are imprisoned while the Bakemon prepare to eat Joe and Sora (^_^;) but the Digimon trick their guard and digivolve to fight and defeat the leader of the Bakemon with some help from a quick-thinking Joe. Joe showed several sides of himself in this episode.
Actually, I guess he didn't really show that calm/nice side of himself, which is the other main aspect of his personality, or his pessimism. He was actually the optimist here; telling Sora not to 'be a quitter', taking charge, convincing himself he was brave after all, seeing the crate and imagining that all sorts of nice food was inside (rather than thinking it were empty, or that Ogremon were inside, as a total pessimist would have done). I guess my favourite part of the episode was the beginning where Gomamon and Joe were on the bed together. The whole thing was just hilarious. ^_^;; And I did like it when Joe said "you don't want to eat me, I'm mostly gristle anyway". (If you didn't know, gristling is also another word for grumbling. ^_^;;) Made me laugh hard, and also when Sora replied by demanding if Joe was saying they should eat HER first. Favourite Joe moments There was one I particularly liked; it was short but highlighted his real self (or the person he had become) perfectly. Okay it probably didn't mean much to a non-Joe-fan but I don't fall into that category, as you've probably established by now. ^_^. Here's the scene: Piedmon, having defeated the two Mega Digimon and their human partners (by throwing white cloths on them that turned them into keychains!), gave chase on the other digidestined, who fled, feeling helpless with their strongest Digimon gone. Running into a cave, they find themselves in something resembling a huge circus tent. Over an enormous, deep chasm are a couple of trapeze swings. It's the only way to cross. (If this isn't scary, I don't know what is. Having to JUMP from trapeze to trapeze with no safety net in the darkness over an enormous pit, with some giant psychotic playwright running behind you waiting to turn you into a keychain. ^_^;;) The smaller kids and their Digimon are sent over first, and of course those who can fly do so. Joe was helping everyone to get onto the trapeze so they could swing across. Finally, Joe, Gomamon and Izzy are left. Joe and Izzy throw Gomamon across, and then Piedmon shows up just behind them. Joe's relatively calm, you can almost tell he's thinking "well, whatever's going to happen, I'll just do what I have to do, no point worrying about what's behind me". Then, he shouts "Izzy, go!" and quickly throws Izzy onto the trapeze, leaving himself behind with Piedmon. Izzy turns and shouts his friend's name, as Joe is captured and turned into a keychain. Izzy actually has tears in his eyes. It turns out to be a somewhat futile gesture as Izzy is captured half a second later, but I still thought it was very brave. Also, typically 'reliable' of him that he would stay behind to make sure everyone else got across safely, when that meant that he himself would not have any help getting on the trapeze, and he's the one afraid of heights. As the tallest, he probably had the best chance of making it alone anyway. Later - well, this isn't really a 'favourite moment' but it's still interesting - when Sora tells everyone else to run off while she tries to stall Piedmon, Gomamon says he wants to stay and fight. Even though he can't digivolve. Sora snaps at him to leave, that Joe sacrificed himself to save them all so Gomamon should try to save himself to honour that. It's weird how someone so practical can be so wrong. You know that Gomamon won't be of much use following TK and Kari anyway, he should try to honour Joe's death by avenging him, or being as brave as he was. He was pretty brave, he even ran at Piedmon and grabbed at his keychain collection. (He grabbed the Matt keychain, which he then tossed to TK, and that's what inspired TK, thus making Angemon digivolve - yup, the representatives of Reliability save the world yet again! ^_-.) *** Anyone who says Joe is a wimp hasn't seen the same show I'm watching. ^_^; He's more realistic than most of the characters who show fear hardly ever. Like, personally, I think most of his fears are rather healthy! *** I like the entire episode "Weregarurumon's Diner", but I guess most specifically where he climbs onto the roof and jumps on Vegiemon's head so that he will drop TK and grab him instead. And then, while the monster is strangling him and threatening to kill him, Joe just encourages him to fight and don't worry about him, although moments before Matt had been shouting at him and distrusting him. Now, Joe's afraid of heights, and probably afraid of being crushed to death for that matter, but he knew it was the only thing to be done; basically, Matt cares about TK more than he cares about Joe, and he could have never fought if he thought his brother would suffer for it. He also realised that, with Joe making the sacrifice he did, there was no way he couldn't do his own part and fight. That's when the Crest of Friendship reacted for the first time! I think it may have also been an attempt of Joe's to prove himself; he knew he had to do something drastic to regain Matt's trust, and he saw the best way; to save Matt's brother. He gets these flashes of extreme bravery, where he does things even most of the other digidestined (who are supposedly braver) would hesitate to do. But mostly he was worried about TK and mad at Vegiemon for stooping to that. Joe is the oldest digidestined and TK is the youngest. I think he does feel a little responsibility for TK. He puts himself at risk to save him again later. *** The first episode about Mimi and Joe after they have split away from the rest of the group is peppered with good Joe scenes (and ones that also make me like Mimi a lot more). Actually, none of them that come to mind are particularly spectacular, but they do show him as a pretty decent guy. He reassures Mimi who is feeling kind of bad about leaving the group. Joe tells her he thinks she's brave for standing up for what she believes in, and also mentions something his brother told him; that fighting doesn't help. This episode is also what makes me think of Joe as a calm, easy-going sort of person. Later, we find that he has brought a whole bunch of useful supplies for their return to the digiworld (presumably, he packed them when he briefly went home before the battle with VenomMyotismon; that was foresight, he must have known they'd be going back to the digiworld). He goes right up close to Ogremon to bandage his arm even though he a) gets faint at the sight of blood and b) had that lovely previous encounter with Ogremon. (Ogremon leapt out of a crate in the ocean, scaring him half to death, and then constantly tried to Pummelwhack him and Gomamon, killing a bunch of fish in the process.)
