Chapter 1
Surprise!
~Author's Note: I wanted to see the Digidestined as High Schoolers, so I came up with this. I have yet to introduce an actual plot. Also, this fic was written just before I saw the ep. with Apocalymon. I'll change it if I want to.~
"Yo! Tai! Fancy seeing YOU here!" Izzy raced over to his old friend.
"Izzy! Long time no see, pal," said Tai. Seeing something famaliar in Izzy's pack, he pulled it out.
"Still got the old laptop, huh? It's practically an antique by now, I bet." Tai tapped the glossy yellow surface. "Looks like it's in pretty good shape, too."
Izzy blushed and grabbed it back. "I do have other computers. It's just that this unit has...sentimental value."
"Sure, whatever that means." Tai chuckled and tried to toss Izzy's hair. "Whoa, you're getting tall."
"Yeah, it's wither that or everything's getting smaller," said Joe, emerging from the depths of the high-school corridor. He re-adjusted his glasses.
"Joe! Whoa, nice hair," said Tai, staring at the spiky points of blue hair. "Whoda thunkit? Joe's hair is spiked!"
Redness overcame Joe's face. "It was Mimi's idea," he murmured, fetching a baseball cap from his bag.
A melodious voice floated out, saying, "Did someone say my name?" and Mimi glided out.
The three boys were silent, mouths agape.
Joe broke the silence first. "Th-th-that's a nice, uh, dress, Mimi."
The rest followed his brave example. "Yeah, it's nice," and "Uh, yeah, it's pro-pro-prodijy..."
Mimi flushed. "Oh, you mean my skirt...Sora said it would knock you guys out," she giggled.
Izzy gulped. He had never really noticed Mimi's legs. She would complain about how tired they were, sure, but, well, her legs were being *shown*. *All* of them. Well, just enough so that she wasn't breaking the school rules. He guessed.
Of course, he, like all boys, had had the Talk with his parents, a couple months after their last adventure. They had said that, in a while, he would become of a "certain age" and notice that girls were suddenly different. Izzy had a feeling that his certain age had just begun.
Tai blushed and tried to change the subject. "So, Joe, how was Shikaro Junior High?"
"Uh, okay, I guess. The P.E. class there totally sucked, though," replied Joe.
"Yeah, and we SO kicked your butt in that soccer tournament last year," added Tai excitedly, forgeting Mimi. "I saw you in the bleachers. You had your shirt off, didn't you?"
"Yeah, I saw Joe. He looked kinda creepy, with all that face paint." Mimi giggled at the memory, shaking her head like a disappointed teacher.
Joe turned beet-red. "Well, it was too bad I couldn't talk with you after the game. You nearly gave me a concussion, ya know? Your kicks have power, yeah, but you need to work on your aim."
Izzy felt left out. He had never paid much attention to soccer games. He was probably surfing the 'net while Joe was screaming his head off and Tai and Sora won the championship for their school. He checked his watch. 7:53, a couple minutes before classes started. He'd better start getting his books.
"Come on, you guys! Please don't fight, not on the first day of school. People are listening!" said Mimi. When they didn't appear to hear, she sighed and leaned against the wall, crossing her legs. "Fine, fine, it's not my fault if the seniors start teasing us."
This made the boys look up and suddenly remind them of Mimi's somewhat revealing attire.
"Uh, yeah, good point," murmured Joe. Izzy could feel the tension rising. If this kept going on, they'd be late to their classes--
"Hey, guys," said Sora as she walked in, relievingly dressed in comfortable and, above all, modest jeans. "Neat seeing all of you here! But there's someone missing--Where's Matt?"
Tai seemed happy to see her. "Hey, Sora! Matt? Didn't see him. Great job on the tournament last year, huh? Didja see Joe? In the front row, shirt off, face paint, yelling his head off?"
Sora laughed and replied, "Yeah, I remember him. Didn't recognize him with all that face paint. And when you chucked that ball at him"--Joe smiled an I-told-you-so smile--"he got so mad," she said, and laughed again.
Tai blushed and put his hand behind his head. "Ha, ha, yeah, that was funny! Especially when Mimi walked over to him at the end of the game and gave him a piece of her mind. I couldn't hear the words, but I bet Joe didn't like 'em!"
Joe and Mimi turned red while Izzy and Tai practically laughed their heads off. Sora smiled a little. "Well, it's nice, all of us in the same place again. We haven't been together like this since Izzy took us to his house for some program that could turn the Digi-"
That sobered up everyone again. Izzy pulled out the CD, remembering that day. He had received an e-mail from Gennai, giving him the instructions for a new program that could turn their Digimon into data and back. He looked at the shiny surface of what was Tentomon inside the protective cover. Well, the Digimon were getting to be hard to take care of before then. And Gennai was only trying to help.
Izzy felt a pang of guilt. He hadn't let Tentomon out of the disc for at least two months now...and neither had anyone else. Only his computer had the program, and the last person to come to his house was Kari, at least nine weeks ago.
"Uh, hi?" Matt had entered. He seemed...odd, somehow. There was a certain air about him. Something that seemed to make him more...tough, somehow. And stronger. Generally, more "manly". Man, that sounds stupid.
"Matt!" Sora said, just stopping herself from hugging him. "Haven't seen you in, like, at least two years, huh?"
Matt seemed embarrassed. "I moved across the bay last year," he said.
"Even so, that shouldn't keep you from coming to visit us at least once in a while!" Mimi put on her snotty look again. Everyone but Matt kept from glancing back at her. Matt's blush grew in strength as he unwillingly gaped at her choice of clothing.
Tai valiantly tried to pull Matt out of his stare by talking about how he invited him to his last birthday party, but it didn't work. They tried everything short of breaking his arm to stop staring at the reddening Mimi. At last, Sora whispered something in his ear that made him say, "Huh?" before returning to reality.
Mimi, who was as red as a beet, carefully inched away from Matt. Her face returned to normal color by the time a large group of sophomores arrived.
"And, like, all of a sudden, he ASKS ME OUT!!! I mean, this is SO unbelievable! I mean, Jake Miyamoto, THE most popular boy in the entire SCHOOL! And, well, you know the rest," said the girl. They all giggled.
They're kinda like Mimi before she met up with us, Izzy thought. They're snotty and treat shopping like Christmas and--wait, I probably shouldn't be aggravating Mimi, even in my own thoughts.
"You are one lucky gal, Jenni," said one of the many girls. Jenni continued. "And, you know, he looked at me with his *dreamy* eyes, and--Watcha lookin' at, girl?" By this, she ment Mimi, who seemed to be listening with interest.
"I--uh, what do you think?" Mimi seemed to be her rebellious self again.
"Nothing much," retorted Jenni. All of the girls in her group stared venom at the group.
"Exactly what *you* are," said Mimi, and, with a toss of her hair, she turned away, achieving the effect of being extremely snotty and superior.
Jenni was gasping with fury, and, as her faithful puppets, so were the other girls. It took her a while to resume her composure, and before she did, we snuck in a few snickers.
"Well," Jenni said airily, "what do we have here?" She moved closer to Matt and sniffed him experimentally. "You're wearing cologne? Try harder next time, 'hunk!'" She used the same hair-toss as Mimi did before sauntering off. Her puppet-groupd followed her example.
Luckily for Matt, the bell rang and everyone was busy running their lockers and checking their schedules.
Unluckily for Matt (and everyone else), that first fight with Jenni had made Mimi and her friends Jenni's arch-enemies for the rest of their lives.
