It's all in the cards

After their failed attempt to get through the gate to their world, the Digidestined are met by Jennai who takes them back to his house. The ask him things like why he calls them the digidestined, and whether he's a Digimon or a human, but he doesn't answer. He has a fairly normal sort of house, and the kids all sit around, looking at the fish Jennai keeps in an aquarium.

Joe: But those are halibut. They're salt-water fish.
Jennai: You are right. So I have to feed them popcorn, salted pretzels and tons of salted nuts.

Jennai shows them Myotismon's current location on a map of their city. Myotismon and company have arrived in the real world, and their presence is causing some technology to go haywire.

Jennai introduces ten keycards, each with a picture of a Digimon, that can be used in a special pattern to unlock the gate to their world by fitting them into nine holes in a stone tablet. However, there is one too many cards, and no way of knowing which is the right card. Tai cheerfully says it doesn't matter; they'll try them all until they get the right combination.

But this is a dangerous idea, Jennai tells them; there are many worlds, and the wrong combination of cards could open the gate to a different world than their own. For example, they could find themselves in a world where Digimon and humans switch skins (Mimi freaks out at this stage ^_^.). They have to get it right first time.

That night, everyone is asleep except for Izzy, who is talking to Jennai. They discuss several things, including:

  • The same matter (molecules and atoms) is used in the composition of all worlds. The digital world is a physical representation of computer data in the human world, and anything strange in the digital world is the result of mixed-up data in the real world.

  • Jennai is not a Digimon, because he does not have any 'attributes' - the attacks Digimon can use, the way Digimon can digivolve, and the way they are good or evil (there are three types of Digimon: data, virus and vaccine). He is, however, just a physical representation of computer data, as Digimon are, but he says he would have a different form in the human world.

  • The modifications Jennai had made to Izzy's computer - a program that would analyse/identify Digimon - would only register Digimon that Izzy himself had seen, not ones that other kids had seen. Jennai promises to remedy the problem, and tells Izzy to get some rest.

In the morning, the kids were eating breakfast (fish ^^;;).

Sora: Wow, Joe, why not just eat the bones too?
    Joe: Hey, I was hungry!

    Jennai comes in.

Jennai: Izzy, I've completed the modifications to your computer. When you insert someone's digivice into this adaptor, the analyser will show information on any Digimon that person has seen. I also installed a new screensaver - you know that one with the coloured fishes swimming around? I really like that one!
Izzy: Great minds do think alike!

Jennai sends them on their way, reminding them that they are the digidestined, they should believe in their power, and that he can't help them after they've gone back to their world. (This isn't true - a couple of episodes later he contacts Izzy via computer. ^^;;)

The kids go back to Myotismon's castle, and Tentomon digivolves twice to Megakabuterimon, to distract the Devidramon guards. They have a loud battle that makes parts of the castle fall in (Izzy: So much for our quiet entrance...). The battle also causes things in the castle to go right-side-up (all the kids crash to the floor, which had formerly been the ceiling) again. Motimon (devolved Tentomon) jumps into Izzy's arms and they head to the room with the gate.

They all discuss how the cards should be arranged. In-training, Rookie and Champion? Good one, bad one? Their size, where they live, their names? Izzy finds the tablet and puzzles over what the symbols on it mean.

There is a crashing sound as parts of the castle crashes in, and Patamon flies off to investigate what made the noise. The kids are getting a bit desperate.

Matt: We have to try, Joe!

Patamon comes back and says the walls and ceiling of the castle are caving in, and the hallways are all blocked. There is no way out - they HAVE to solve the gate's puzzle, and soon! They decide to choose one person to make the best decision, and Joe nominates Tai.

Joe: I'm not trying to put you on the spot or anything like that. I just think we all really believe in you, Tai.

Matt agrees, saying that Tai is the one in charge - without him, they all fell apart, and it was him who got them all together again. Tai is nervous, but everyone encourages him, and then he says, as leader, they must respect his decision - to have Izzy do it! They all agree, knowing that Izzy is the best guy for the job.

Izzy is nervous at the responsibility, but uses his computer to try to find inspiration. He soon has an idea, and puts the cards down in order of whether they are data, virus or vaccine, rookie, champion or ultimate. However, Gomamon and Agumon cards both occupy the vaccine/rookie square, and nobody knows which is the fake. Because choosing that is really up to chance, they choose Tai to work that out. Everyone applauds Izzy, but then parts of the ceiling crumble, and...

A large group of spider Digimon drop from the ceiling! They are led by Dokugumon, a huge, powerful spider Digimon who isn't going to let them out alive. Gomamon, Palmon and Gabumon all digivolve to battle, while Tai tries to decide which card is the right one.

Meanwhile, more parts of the castle fall apart. Spiders attack Sora, so Yokomon quickly digivolves into Biyomon to protect her. Tai is agonising over this tough decision, and Dokugumon is winning, really beating the champion-form Digimon badly. Matt cries out in horror as Garurumon gets hurt, and the wolf Digimon digivolves again. Ikkakumon and Togemon devolve, falling to the ground in pain.

There really is no more time, so Tai forces himself to make a decision, slamming down Gomamon's card into the slot and keeping Agumon. The gate begins to open. Everyone runs into it, and Weregarurumon, locked in battle with Dokugumon, nearly misses out, but devolves into Tsunomon. Matt grabs him and runs through just as the gate closes. They all fall through some sort of warp...

The kids find themselves back where they started - at summer camp. But their Digimon are nowhere to be seen. Could they have gotten the cards wrong after all? Sora is starting to get upset, when the Digimon reappear, with bundles of leaves - they were looking for lunch while their children charges were out cold.

Joe: Now that we're home, we don't have to eat leaves any more! We can eat cheeseburgers!
Mimi: That's right, and pepperoni pizza!
    TK: And french fries!
    Matt: And ice cream!
    Sora: Yeah, and broccoli!
    Everyone: BROCCOLI?!

They are happy to be back, and ready to go and look for the eighth child.

    The Eighth Child Revealed

Tai talks to Joe on the phone. It has been a fruitless day; none of the people in Joe's address book lived on Highton View Terrace. Tai still can't remember where he left his own address book, and goes to look for it again... (I thought he was going to use Sora's?)

Kari tells Miko that Tai's room is worse than her litterbox. Miko curls up on Kari's lap as Kari strokes her. Gatomon watches from outside and thinks what a perfect life Miko has. Nobody was ever that nice to her... Myotismon hated her eyes, and continually attacked her until she developed her meanness. She still has a scar, under her glove...

She tries to remember more of her past, but can only think back to where Myotismon found her and made her work for him. She also wonders why she couldn't bring herself to kill Kari earlier... she got a strange sensation when she was around her.

Wizardmon appears behind Gatomon while she is trying to remember, and she snaps that he should be looking for the eighth child. He flies off and his crest copy glows - he follows it to find the digivice in a crow's nest! Demidevimon comes up from behind and wants to see what Wizardmon has found, but Wizardmon fobs him off, knowing that if Demidevimon knew about the crest he would try to take all the credit.

Back at the Kamiya residence, they're watching TV (the news is about monsters, and women being struck with "sudden anaemia") when Tai gets another phone call - it's Matt. Matt tells Tai a little about the battle with Myotismon, and Tai is shocked to hear that Myotismon attacked his own henchmen. Matt says there isn't much time...

Wizardmon comes up to Gatomon again, and tries to talk to her. She is mistrustful, but he says he prefers to take her side over Myotismon's. Some time ago, Wizardmon had been travelling alone for a while, and fell out of the sky to crash-land. Nobody helped him and he thought he would die, until Gatomon came.

Wizardmon: I know you helped me, but I don't have anything for you.
Gatomon: I don't want anything. You must be very lonely to say that.
    Wizardmon: What do you mean?
Gatomon: When you've been alone for a long time, your heart becomes very hard. It happens to everyone, you know. Even me.

Gatomon went on to tell Wizardmon that she felt she was looking for someone, but she couldn't remember who. Gatomon in the present doesn't remember saying this at all; she has forgotten even meeting/helping Wizardmon back then.

Wizardmon shows Gatomon the crest and tells her that the key to finding the eighth child is in her own heart - Gatomon can confront her past, if she is not afraid of what she might find. The two go to the Kamiya's balcony, where Kari is, and talk to her.

Gatomon begins to remember. Ever since she was in her first digivolved form, she felt that she had to find someone, to wait for someone. She waited for years, but Kari never came - Myotismon did instead. When Kari takes the digivice, it reacts...

Tai and Agumon come out onto the balcony, and are mistrustful of Wizardmon and Gatomon. Agumon does "pepper breath" and Gatomon shoves Kari out the way to get hit herself. But she is okay; "this is nothing compared to what I've been through".

Gatomon explains that Kari is the eighth child, and that she will be her Digimon, to protect her always. Wizardmon gives Kari's digivice to Tai - Kari cannot be seen with it, or she will not be safe from Myotismon. Wizardmon and Gatomon go to find Kari's real crest.

The two sneak to Myotismon's quarters - it is night, and he is out feeding. They get past the Bakemon guard and find the crest in Myotismon's coffin. But then Myotismon comes and finds them there - he has the real crest, which he shatters! He says he always knew, from Gatomon's eyes, that she would betray him.

They all go outside to fight.

Myotismon strikes Wizardmon down, and Gatomon shouts "hey, why don't you pick on someone one-tenth your own size?!"

Myotismon: There are those eyes again, and this time not only are they filled with rebellion, but I can also see a glimmer of hope! The hope that one day, your dreams will come true!
Gatomon: That's right! I believe in my dreams and that's how I made it this far!
Myotismon: And just what have you really achieved? You believe in your worthless friends. And you believe that your dreams can come true. Dreams do not exist for the stupid!
Gatomon: If you believe in yourself, then dreams are real! And to make my dreams come true, I only have to do one thing... defeat YOU!

Myotismon realises that Gatomon is the eighth Digimon.

Gatomon tries to fight but is no match for Myotismon, who viciously attacks Wizardmon and throws him into the river. He does not come out... Gatomon starts to cry and is all alone, but Greymon comes running up with Tai. Greymon digivolves, and fights, but devolves into Agumon after, like, five seconds of battle. (Weregarurumon took a LOT more punishment than that...)

Things have changed now that Myotismon knows Gatomon is the eighth Digimon. He won't kill her; rather, he'll use her as bait to find the eighth child, whose identity he still doesn't know! His bats fly off with her, and she screams "Tai, help me!"

    Flower Power

Myotismon creates a fog to cover one area of the city.

Mimi and Palmon are in a park, Palmon putting her roots into the soil. She complains the soil is polluted and tastes bad. Mimi starts to pour mineral water onto her roots instead, when her father shows up - he was late home because there was a problem with the trains. She quickly smothers Palmon and walks home with him.

Back at the Tachikawa home, Mimi apologises for smothering Palmon, but says she couldn't pretend Palmon was a stuffed toy - she has to retain her reputation for good taste, after all. (Palmon's feelings are hurt. :( ) Meanwhile, Mimi's mother is feeding her husband and pleased because he likes the food. The mother is a bit immature, but seems very set on pleasing her husband.

Joe sits in a stairwell somewhere with Gomamon, and sighs because he got a C on something (I thought it was school holidays, and he spent all day making phone calls?) and now can't get into med school. ^_^.

Gomamon: A C?! Forget about Myotismon, this is a REAL disaster!

Meanwhile, Matt is at his own home trying desperately to change the channels on his TV, but nothing is working - there is just static - and he is becoming frustrated.

Matt's father - a reporter, I think - is at his office, but a lot of the communication systems are out. He decides to go and investigate, and some of his friends/co-workers go with him.

Joe is trapped at a train station, trying to get home (I assume - I have no idea where he was before), and things are starting to fall apart... many computer systems are down. Gomamon says it could be worse...

Kari, Agumon and Tai are at home and go to bed. The last we saw of them, Tai was looking in horror after Gatomon. I am not sure what he tells Kari, because she is not catatonic (hahah, CAT, get it), although she's worried about Gatomon. But she says she isn't afraid to fight Myotismon.

    Matt's father is driving with his three friends, trying to find out the cause of the fog and the monsters... and then a huge mean Digimon appears. They get out the car, then are attacked by a pack of Gizamon, so they get back in. ^^;;

TK is eating dinner and watching TV, which shows a news broadcast about how communication in that area of the city is out, and there are problems there. He says "I'm coming, Matt" and stands up. His mother is reluctant but he says she doesn't understand, and he has to find out what's happening with Matt and his father. His mother takes him out...

At Matt's house, Matt and Gabumon are sleeping, but his dad comes to wake him.

Meanwhile, Joe is *still* stuck at Shimbashi station, and decides to go to the pier to see if he can get a boat instead. After he leaves, Phantomon and some Bakumon come and attack at the station.

Sora is getting ready for soccer practise, thinking she can see Tai there, because she needs to talk to him - the phones are out. She calls goodbye to her mother, who ignores her - immersed in work as usual.

At Tai's house, Tai's mother opens the door and a swarm of Bakemon come in. They drag his mother out. At the Tachikawa residence, Mimi and her parents are also trying to escape from Bakemon. This happens at Sora's house (although Sora isn't there), and Biyomon attacks to protect Sora's mother - who freaks out that Biyomon can talk.

Sora's mother: I thought you were a stuffed animal!
Biyomon: Yeah... well, life is full of surprises.

Biyomon and Sora's mother go to find Sora, who must be in trouble...?

All this is part of Myotismon's plan to seperate the kids from their parents. He's not doing a very good job though. He does have Gatomon prisoner.

Matt's father takes him somewhere and tells him to stay there with Gabumon where it's safe, while he goes to investigate things more. Gabumon is shocked to hear that Matt's father knows about him. (Don't ask me why. I mean, if he's walking around, it's not a very good disguise. ^^;)

Outside Tai's apartment block, Phantomon is attacking, and Greymon comes out with Tai and Kari. Mrs Kamiya freaks out (thinking Greymon is another bad monster, and has her children) and tries to reach Tai and Kari, but Greymon has to run to escape Phantomon, as he doesn't really have the requisite energy to fight, particularly after taking a nasty blow.

Biyomon and Sora's mother plan to disguise themselves as Bakemon.

All these monster attacks have had one purpose - rounding people up. They are taken to the station and held prisoner there. Mimi meets up with Sora, and Palmon is still covered up - nobody knows about her, she is their trump card.

Mr Kamiya is trying to comfort his wife, who is in tears worrying about Tai and Kari being carried off by Greymon. Sora approaches them and reassures her, telling her that Greymon is a good Digimon - and there are plenty more where that came from. "We've got some powerful friends on our side."

Two Bakemon (Sora's mother and Biyomon) are about to go into the station, but Sora's mother pauses to ask Biyomon if Sora said anything about hating her. Biyomon recalls how it was Sora's love for her mother, and Biyomon, that made her digivolve to Garudamon.

Mimi, Palmon and Sora are sitting with Tai/Kari's parents, Mimi's parents and Matt's father's friends. Mimi's mother gets stressed/hysterical, and makes it extremely obvious where Mimi has inherited her personality. ^_^.

Mrs Tachikawa: I just can't stand this place one second longer!
Mr Tachikawa (jovially): Well, you've been wanting to get away, look at this as a vacation!
Mrs Tachikawa: WHO ASKED YOU TO TALK?!... I'm sorry, children, I didn't mean to yell. It's just that I'm not used to being held captive by creatures from another world.
Some guy: Don't worry, lady, you'll get used to it!
Mrs Tachikawa: But I don't wanna get used to it, I wanna go home and sleep in my own bed! I wanna live life to the fullest, I wanna clean lint out of my dryer, I wanna pick up after my doggie! I wanna know what's happening on my soap operas!

A comment from one of Matt's father's friends reminds Sora of something... Joe telling her how to defeat Bakemon - mind over matter. She tells the others her plan... some men start bashing away at Bakemon while everyone else stampedes out of the station, chanting "Bakemon, lose your power!"

Everyone is relieved, and thinks they are safe, when they see Darktyrannomon (the Digimon Matt's dad and his friends saw in the car earlier). Mimi's father rushes at Darktyrannomon (he is about the size of one of the Digimon's toes!), bellowing "you couldn't be in safer hands!" (Seconds before he gets bashed.)

Mimi is horrified, and Palmon digivolves. While Togemon fights Darktyrannomon, Mimi and her mother run to their father. The two spouses get all lovey dovey, and Mimi urges them to run for cover. In the background, Togemon is losing, and Mimi is worried. Things are really looking hopeless... the good guys are hopelessly outnumbered... technology has gone wacko... monsters are attacking everywhere, and the city is in chaos. These scenes flash through the following dialogue:

"Oh, it's the end! It's over! Myotismon will rule the world! This is terrible! Now my family's going to suffer, and so are my friends, there's gotta be something I can do!"

This is enough. Mimi's crest glows, and Togemon digivolves into Lillymon, a small fairy Digimon. Mimi was so busy despairing that she didn't notice the digivolution, and wonders where Lillymon came from, as she uses "flower cannon" against Darktyrannomon.

Lillymon is pretty and graceful, and asks Mimi if she is still "in bad taste" (referring to Mimi's earlier comment about stuffed toys). Mimi apologises and Lillymon grins, encourages Mimi, and goes to fight Darktyrannomon. She wins fairly easily, putting a wreath of flowers around DTM's neck that negates the negative power.

Now Joe is at the docks.

Joe: I should have known. What made me think the boats would be working when nothing else is?
Gomamon: It could be worse. We could be stuck in some crazy -
Joe: Please stop saying it could be worse. I have news for you, pal, it IS worse! The whole world is stuck in turmoil, and we're waiting for a ride into town!
Gomamon: We might as well just give up right now!
Joe: Well, I wouldn't go that far... after all, it could be worse...

(Gomamon knows just how to handle Joe! ^_^.)

TK and Patamon are being driven towards all this chaos... his father is trying to get to a satellite dish, presumably to investigate the reason for the TV frequency disturbances.

Tai, Kari and Agumon are running down the street, and they go past where Matt has been told to wait for his father. The five (including Gabumon) meet up and Matt is amazed to find out that Kari is the eighth child.

Phantomon and the Bakumon are attacking Sora. Two of the Bakumon go to grab her, but they're Sora's mother and Biyomon. Biyomon digivolves.

Phantomon: Oh, it's just a bird. A large bird, I grant you. A large, ANGRY bird! *gets hit*

Sora's mother tries to cover for Sora so she can escape, but Sora is worried about her mother.

Mimi thinks that she and Lillymon have won, but then Myotismon shows up, zaps Darktyrannomon back to the Digiworld, and attacks Lillymon!
